Engineer Spotlight - Doug Hietpas

Meet… Doug Hietpas! Doug is an Application Engineer with SE Automation. He works out of our Appleton, WI location. Get to know Doug!

What is your role at Standard Electric and what do you specialize in?

I am an Application Engineer for SE Automation. My solution specialties are Siemens Automation, Motion Control, HMI, and networking.

How did you become interested in Engineering?

As I transitioned from High School to College, my strong subjects were Math and Physics. Engineering made sense. So, I committed to this as a career in enrolling at Milwaukee School of Engineering.

What attracted you to this industry?

My career started as a controls engineer… working for an Original Equipment Manufacturer. I was exposed to the Siemens platform in this role and saw what the Applications Engineers from Siemens did.  This intrigued me, along with a change in the travel methods enough to transition from customer to manufacturer rep.  Then, when Standard Electric negotiated access to the Siemens Automation and Motion Control lines, I saw a new opportunity…along with the ability to have better travel control and become a better husband and father. That brought me to SE Automation 20 years ago.

What traits do you have that help you succeed in your role?

I have good product knowledge along with years of experience in different machine needs. I believe that I am a good communicator with a positive attitude. This allows me to be a good resource for customers.

When you’re working with clients, how do you help them identify and solve the problems that they’re facing?

I ask a lot of questions and listen to the answers. The conversation should be driven by the needs of the customer.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while working at Standard Electric?

There are many ways to solve a problem. In the end, if you find a solution and it works, it’s good.

What kinds of things do you like to do outside of work?

I have many hobbies. I am a musician wannabe, and actor, and I’m very involved in my church. My wife and I like to camp and travel a bit. During the Christmas Season, my life is dominated by my Santa Claus mission. I just finished my 33rd year of being Santa.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I have exactly 100 first cousins.
